There are two really common mistakes that people make when applying for the Age Pension. The first common mistakes people make is as a couple, assuming that both members of the couple have to be of Age Pension age before they can apply for the Age Pension….

I was born in September 1953. When can I apply?
Hi David, Assuming you are born on the 30th of September you will be eligible to apply for the Age Pension on the 29th December 2018. However, if you were born earlier in September, you will be eligible to apply earlier in December. Please feel free to test out our calculator https://retirementessentials.com.au/age-pension/eligibility-calculator/ or don’t hesitate to contact us 1300 527 727.
I have long service leave due which I was planning on having paid out when I retire on 21st December. Does this make a difference to applying for the age pension? Do have have to wait the 5 or 6 weeks until this money has been used before I apply for my pension?
Hi there Glenda
Great question, if you get your LSL paid out in a lump sum it is no longer classified as income rather as an asset in the bank. therefore you will just need to make sure you are under the assets limit to be able to lodge your Age Pension application. Assets don’t include value of the home you own and live in but does include bank balances, shares, super, personal assets (like cars, caravans, boats and the contents of your home). Depending on your relationship status and home ownership status then this will determine your assets test limit. Please see our website for more information on these limits https://retirementessentials.com.au/age-pension/. If you would like to chat to us about all of this please do not hesitate to call us on 1300 527 727

My husband and myself have just separated after 40yrs of marriage. He gets a pension for serving in the Armed Forces. We jointly have three investment houses, which doesn’t affect his pension but I imagine it will leave me very little to live on in regard to getting an age pension if they class these as assets. I am scared for my future. What is your advice please.
