Centrelink 2023 holiday reporting dates

Everything you need to know

You may be one of the 70% of older Australians who receives a full or part Age Pension or a DVA payment. If so, here’s a handy summary of Centrelink availability over the coming Christmas and New Year holiday period, with all the main things you’ll need to know.

Opening hours

Centrelink will be closed:

  • Monday 25 December 2023
  • Tuesday 26 December 2023
  • Wednesday 27 December 2023
  • Monday 1 January 2024.

Smaller service centres close for the entire public holiday season from Friday 22 December 2023 to Tuesday 2 January 2024.

You can find more information about service centre closures here.

Centrelink payment and reporting dates can change due to public holiday closure. It is possible that you may even be paid early!

If you report early during your assessment period, you’ll need to include what you expect to be paid for your full period. You must also do this for any other changes that may affect your payment. (Should you make a mistake, you can correct your report within 14 days, or when you next report.)

If you report after your assessment period, Centrelink will pay you after you report to them. You might prefer to do this so that you are sure of your employment income or changes to your circumstances. The finer point on reporting can be read here.

Other ways to get in touch

Centrelink advises that you can use your Centrelink online account through myGov to :

Other options include Express Plus mobile apps and phone self-service.

You can still report your income to Centrelink, even when it is closed. However, if you do this on a public holiday you will be paid after the public holiday.

Steven’s handy hints:

We asked Steven Sadler, Head of Retirement Essentials’ Customer Service Centre whether he had any tips for those who are receiving Centrelink benefits over the holiday break.

He suggested three things:

  1. Take the time to read the dates – note which ones will affect you, so there are no surprises.
  2. Be aware that the normal application processing times (which were 4-5 weeks and have now stretched to 8 weeks or longer) may be extended.
  3. If you need to call Centrelink, the best time to call is at 8am sharp when the lines open. You will probably still go on hold (for 45 minutes or so), but at least you will go on hold. If you call after 10 am you may simply be timed out. If you are calling, be sure to have a coffee and good book on hand – or maybe do some work on your computer. That way you are less likely to be annoyed when you finally do get through to a Centrelink staff member.

Are you receiving your maximum entitlements? Use the Retirement Essentials Age Pension Eligibility Calculator and see if you are under-claiming today.

Retirement Essentials will also be working at reduced capacity.  We will be closed on the public holidays of 25th and 26th of December and also the 1st of January.  From the 27th to 29th of December our call centre will be closed but the team will still be working to process Age Pension and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card applications.  And from the 2nd to the 5th of January the Call Centre will only be open from 12-4pm.  All other days it will be business as usual.

Whatever you and yours are doing over the break, we hope you are planning for some relaxing time out. And if you want to quickly get an application submitted before everything slows down you can get started by checking your eligibility here.
